Mongaup Falls Reservoir

Mongaup Falls Reservoir

An eagle watch blind and gorgeous views, just a mile down the road. Bald eagles can be seen year-round but are especially prevalent November through March when northern eagles come down to roost and hunt along the reservoir system. From April through October, the dirt road across from the eagle blind is open. There is a beautiful vista a little more than a mile in. Parking is available at the beginning of the road if you want to make it a hike.

Mongaup River Trail

Mongaup River Trail

This trail runs along the Mongaup River in its final stretch before it empties into the Delaware River. The hike is easy and scenic. It's an out-and-back trail that ends at a small family cemetery for the Knight Family, who were some of the first American settlers in the area. Across Route 97 you can see remnants of the D&H Canal that once ran from northern Pennsylvania to Kingston and the Hudson River.

Tusten Mountain Trail

A 3-mile moderate loop in Narrowsburg that climbs through forest to a scenic overlook of the Delaware River. Probably the best hike in easy driving distance. Pair with lunch or shopping in Narrowsburg afterward.

Revolutionary War battle site with quiet, well-marked trails through the woods. Interpretive signs along the way. Good for a contemplative hour outdoors.

Neversink Gorge

Neversink River Unique Area (Neversink Gorge)

Over 14 miles of trails through 6,580 acres of protected gorge, with three waterfalls (Mullet Brook Falls, High Falls, and Denton Falls). The Nature Conservancy named the Neversink one of the 75 "Last Great Places" in the world. Start at the Katrina Falls Road trailhead for the most accessible parking and maintained trails. No swimming or camping allowed. Cell service is poor, so download a map before you go.

A beautifully scenic stretch of road overlooking the Delaware River from over 200 feet up. Just outside of Port Jervis with several pullouts to take it all in.

Bashakill Wildlife Management Area

Bashakill Wildlife Management Area

The Bashakill is a favorite walking destination at any time of the year. It has lots of wildlife and pretty views. It's an old track bed, so entirely flat. It can be muddy at many times of the year. Many parking locations. Across from Bashakill Winery is a popular spot...eagles off to left side of that parking. This is the best kayak launch. Half a mile past the winery on the left is a local waterfall that flows great at this time of year and dries up in summer.

History, art, big things to see
Roebling Delaware Aqueduct

Roebling Delaware Aqueduct

The oldest existing wire suspension bridge in the US, built in 1848 by John A. Roebling, the same engineer who later designed the Brooklyn Bridge. You can drive across the one-lane bridge or walk it on foot. Beautiful spot where the Delaware and Lackawaxen rivers meet, with eagles often visible from above.

Zane Grey Museum

Zane Grey Museum

The former home of the Western novelist, now a National Park Service site overlooking the Delaware River in Lackawaxen, PA. Small but well done, and a good rainy day backup. Cross the Roebling Aqueduct to get there and you've got a great half-day.

A gorgeous triple-arch stone bridge built in 1872, set in a small park with picnic tables and a creek. Free, easy stop, great for photos. Pair it with Bethel Woods or one of the wineries.

Grey Towers National Historic Site

The French château-style former home of Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the US Forest Service and a two-term Pennsylvania governor, on 102 acres just outside Milford, PA. The grounds and gardens are free to walk year-round, sunrise to sunset, and dog-friendly, with room for kids to run. Hourly guided house and garden tours run Memorial Day through early November for a small fee.
